Which tabletop game has the better lore and setting, Age of Sigmar or Warhammer Fantasy Battles?

I think that In Warhammer Fantasy Battles, the protagonist faction is The Empire - a pastiche of a steampunk fantasy Holy Roman Empire fighting for survival in a world with the darkest power. The average warrior of The Empire is probably a shopkeeper or a ratcatcher with a small but vicious dog (the latter being a notable Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay thing), and most people are trying to go through their daily lives while staying safe from the Ruinous Powers. There are also great heroes (such as Felix and Gotrek) and mid level champions and heroes.

Also In Age of Sigmar the protagonist faction is the Stormcast Eternals (frequently known as the Sigmarines) are all big damn heroes who are slowly losing their personalities. The scope of the war is endless, and the whole thing is war between heroes.
Warhammer Fantasy’s Old World has a much greater variety of people it focuses on, much more depth, and because the setting is small rather than endless the victories and defeats actually mean something.

Age of Sigmar is a horrible setting and commonly hated by Warhammer fans.

It’s basically designed as excuse to sell completely new sets of miniatures.

If any tabletop battle players ever needed a story behind why their dwarves are fighting lizardmen - now they have it easier: Age of Sigmar offers explanation “Because portals open randomly and everyone is fighting everyone else all the time”. It’s boring but it’s there. In old Warhammer you would have to say “Yea, there’s a dwarven expedition to Lustria set to retrieve a lost runsemith anvil lost to dark elves in time of troubles”, which would require about 4 seconds of creative thinking.

Age of Sigmar story would also make a lot of sense for a mobile game or web based strategy.

Still, I’m not sure if it was a bad business decision. Maybe Age of Sigmar will find a niche where Warhammer Fantasy was dying.

Definitely Warhammer fantasy battles, this is mostly because it was around for a lot longer and as such the lore was more in depth and complete than Age of Sigmar is.
