Taking photos of whole armies

There are lots of guides of how to take photos of signgle miniatures or squads. But what are your best tips for taking photos of the whole army?

I feel that either you focus on one unit and everything else gets irrelevant, or you go for a long deepth of field and then the phot gets incredibly flat and messy.
