Warhammer 40K Makes it to the BAFTA Longlist
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) honors “the best game of the year, across all genres and platforms every year. This year a Warhammer 40K game has made it to the Academy’s Longlist. The list is made up of 60 of the best games across 17 categories.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin is the only game from the Warhammer 40K franchise to have made it to the list. The game joins nine other games in the category of Best British Games. The decision is based on the judges and there is not much that the game can show to win this nomination.
Notably, BAFTA is showcasing a larger kist this year and the voting will continue until March 7, 2024, when the final nominations will be announced. The main award ceremony will be held on April 11, 2024, and the winners of each category will be awarded.
For now, there are some hot stats that have become noteworthy.
- Baldur’s Gate 3, which won best game at The Game Awards, has 11 mentions on the longlist and leads the line-up.
- Alan Wake 2 is in second place with 10.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Hogwarts Legacy are tied with nine nominations on the list
Many Warhammer 40K games have been nominated before to either the BAFTA or The Games Award. For example. Total War: Warhammer III, had 9 nominations but never won an award. Similarly, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide won “Best Multiplayer Game” in the Gamescom Award 2022.
However, this year has been an important year for video games with more releases of both new and evolving games. According to BAFTA, the longlist is longer this year due to the wide plethora of talents it found.
