In 2023, Owlcat Games released Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, a CRPG set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The game is endeared by critics and fans for its deep story, in-depth gameplay mechanics, and amazing art direction.
Based on Warhammer fantasy lore, Rogue Trader lets players take control of a mighty trade empire. Tasked with bringing order to the Koronus Expanse, the trader does so in the name of the God Emperor. Howver, gamers may elect to betray the Imperium and become a slave of the Ruinous Powers of Chaos.
In fact, Rogue Trader is both big and dense; there are so many interlocking scenarios that even Owlcat couldn’t keep track of them all.
“There were some sequences and scenes that were performing in a way we didn’t expect. It was an almost scientific discovery to understand how things would work or not work together in combination,” said Anatoly Shestov, executive producer of Rogue Trader.

Even as the game plans to roll out its first expansion, some things are still worth solidifying. According to Shestov, Void Shadows is inspired by mechanics that the team initially hoped to tackle for launch, but ultimately had to postpone.
“The ship itself, we wanted to open it up to more points of view. We wanted to tell different stories about the people who live there, the difficult choices happening there,” said Shestov. “We found this compelling story about things that were happening previously and right now throughout the story with your crew.”
