From Warhammer to Age of Sigmar
The old worlds have changed so much and so have the armies that represented them. Warhammer has evolved from army to army, world to world., and as it did we have kept our tabletops abreast. What did we do with the earlier places? Did we update them, or did we keep them?
Whatever you did with yours, Warhammer has updated at least seven times now. each time it did there were common changes.
- New handbooks
- New worlds and new rule book
- New army units
The Empire was the central faction in Warhammer. It represented the human nation at the Old World’s center, they raged battles against internal riffles and enemy forces that threatens from the outside.
In Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, the human nation is now the Cities of Sigmar faction. These are now made of humans, dwarves, and elves who fight to protect and defend Sigmar from the enemies who seek to destroy it in their expansion conquests.
The Adeptus Astartes Space Marines became the iconic army of the Warhammer game. Their spiritual or religious prowess themes allowed them to quickly transform into Warhammer 40,000‘s baseline army.
Nonetheless, the addition of Primaris Marines to the lore transformed them into godlike soldiers with superior augmentation. A change some players found less desirable.
Another notable change was regarding the Warhammer‘s Orcs and Goblins, and the Warhammer 40,000‘s Space Orks, which were maintained in both editions. They represented a faction of violent beings inspired by British football hooligans.
However, in Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, the beloved Orruks have become the central group of the Grand Alliance of Destruction. This push of making them a warring and destructive faction has changed and diminished their role.
Finally, one of the most notable changes in the Warhammer editions are the Necrons. These were originally soulless mechanical humanoids enslaved by the C’tan star gods. They silently waited to erase the souls of the inhabitants of any faction.
Surprisingly, Warhammer 40,000 Fifth Edition reversed their lore completely. They’re now the remnants of an old empire who have enslaved the C’tan.
There are many more changes. What did you do with the pieces?
