Games Workshop and Amazon Running Out of Time
As Games Workshop released its annual report for 2024 (via IGN), the Internet flared up with chatter on its screen partnership. The report included an update on its licenses with Amazon declaring the process as still ongoing. However, it also stated that if Amazon makes a Warhammer 40,000 movie, it could open up further licensing rights. Ideally, top Games Workshop’s fantasy properties like Age of Sigmar or Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
Unfortunately, Amazon and Games Workshop don’t have much time left to agree on the show they want to make before their deal expires.
“Games Workshop and Amazon are working together for a period of 12 months, ending in December 2024, to agree creative guidelines for the films and television series to be developed by Amazon,” a section of the annual report related to licensing deals reads in part. “The agreement will only proceed if the creative guidelines are mutually agreed between Games Workshop and Amazon. We will update you accordingly.”
Games Workshop and Amazon Faces Little Time
With still some hope, a new grimdark series is still in the works, but not enough to say it’s happening. Nonetheless, with only five more months before the current deal dissolves, Amazon is against the ropes. Once the time elapses, Games Workshop will be free to take the grimdark universe elsewhere.
However, there are many things to consider when making TV, especially when it comes down to execution. Some of which Games Workshop is familiar with, having gone through a similar process with Spotnitz Productions in 2019. Back then, the company announced it was developing a TV series based on the character of Gregor Eisenhorn. An inquisitor in the Imperium of Man tasked with hunting down corrupting alien influences in human society.
Nevertheless, after the agreement was originally announced, no action was taken, and the idea; eventually expired. Years later, Games Workshop began discussions with Amazon
