Games Workshop Announces New Combat of Arena
Warhammer is so enormous that it has somehow managed to stay in the news on a daily basis. Today, Monday, July 17, is no exception. Games Workshop has announced Combat Arena: Lair of the Beast, a new edition of one of the best Warhammer 40k board games.
According to the British miniature maker, the new edition will come with amazing miniatures. Some of these were last seen in the Warhammer 40k dungeon crawler Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress. The post stated that the new release will be available “later this month at Barnes and Noble in North America, and Müller, Thalia, Elbenwald, and GameStop in Germany”.
Game History
The Combat Arena has come a long way and has evolved by copying items from other Warhammer editions. Combat Arena is a lightweight, anarchic beat-em-up full of chaos and carnage.
- The rules were first printed in Gorechosen, a game of bloody pit-fights between Khorne worshippers in the Age of Sigmar setting.
- Game Workshop followed that up with Combat Arena, which swapped out the fantasy miniatures for champions from various Warhammer 40k factions,
- Finally Combat Arena: Clash of Champions.
The new edition has not changed. Instead, it is still copying from earlier editions. Lair of the Beast adds a suite of nine character miniatures previously only available in Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress, plus an obligatory Space Marine. It also includes the long out-of-print Ambull miniature, which was only available in a limited-run Blackstone Fortress expansion. It looks like the Ambull is an antagonist, rather than a playable character.
With all the excitement following the announcement, it shows just how much the gaming community adores this miniature game. Games Workshop has landed a goldmine and Warhammer won’t be going anywhere soon. As fans get ready to explore new wars, even this blood-filled version is a top gamer.
