Games Workshop Leaves Kislev and Cathay Outside Old World
Total Warhammer 3 offers some tasty updates for Grand Cathay and Kislev, but Games Workshop says those factions will not be officially supporting Warhammer: The Old World at this time.
A post on the Warhammer Community website on Thursday announced the release of a bunch of shiny new units for three Total War Warhammer 3 factions – Kislev, Cathay, and Tzeentch – as part of the free Shadows of Change DLC.
“Fans of Warhammer: The Old World should note that there aren’t any current plans to bring Kislev or Grand Cathay to the tabletop for the foreseeable future,” Games Workshop said in a footnote.
Fans of old-school Warhammer fantasy wargames rejoiced in 2021 after Creative Assembly revealed Kislev and Cathay as launch factions for Total Warhammer 3, along with the tantalizing hint that every unit would have a full tabletop rule set.
Notably, Total War Warhammer 3: Shadows of Change, which releases today, adds iconic Warhammer fantasy units like Kislev’s Frost Wyrm and Cathay’s Celestial Lion.
Grand Cathay and Kislev each get two pages of lore in the just-released The Old World rulebook. However, that does not mean they will become full-blown Warhammer The Old World factions at this point.
In Forces of Fantasy or Ravening Hordes, they aren’t supported with rules, and neither are they included as Legacy Factions like Dark Elves and Vampire Counts, which received barebones rules just to allow fans to use their old armies again.
As a result of Thursday’s Warhammer Community article, it remains unclear how Cathay will be involved with Warhammer: The Old World. However, Cathay concept art appears as part of The Old World’s logo, and the development diary for 2022 and 2023 mentioned Kislev as a “perfect candidate” for further investigation.
Cathay and Kislev army lists, and any new miniatures from these factions, are unlikely to appear in Warhammer Fantasy Battle until 2025. Given the slow pace of Games Workshop’s Warhammer Fantasy Battle reboot, we doubt any new miniatures will be released until then.
