The Light Cavalry – Warhammer 40,000 The Old World
Light cavalry can still win the game even if they don’t always have the most power. They are useful for running rings around the enemy and hitting key targets. They require a little more skill to use.
In this area, Spider Riders are a well-known light cavalry, if nothing else because their models are so common. Stats-wise, Spider Riders don’t have much to talk about. With a lot of 3s, they are unmentioned but have slower movement than most.
They are at the low end of the unit range, but what they have going for them is Poisoned attacks, which both they and the mounts have. This is really nice. As a cheap unit, they can put out plenty of attacks, and poison can be effective.
Although it’s not a broken unit, it can really come in handy when combined with the Da Spider Banner. This will let poison trigger on a 5+. This can take down much larger targets but poorly armored foes with ease.
Staying With the Light Cavalry Armies
Despite their poor stats, Hexwraiths still play well in a specialized light class. They run 31 points, which is about as much as many heavy cavalries. The saving grace here is that they are ethereal, which makes them untouchable by most things.
Although they are Ethereal, you can’t just throw them into any enemy unit, high combat resistance can still knock them out. They also need to watch out for magical attacks from their enemies. However, their great weapons and the ability to wound any unit they meet make them quite deadly.
While one magic missile could cost you hundreds of points, other armies won’t be able to deal with them. Running them around and messing with your enemies can win you games.
There are many more light cavalries in The Old World and learning to use them can give you a winning edge.
