Warhammer 40k Balance Dataslate Rule Changes
There are huge changes in the newest balance dataslate for the 10th edition. The new rules will impact the dominant factions and their gameplay. This is the first Warhammer 40k balance dataslate for this edition.
According to a post on the Games Workshop community website on Thursday, September 7, there is a new balance dataslate. The new dataslate will affect everything from core rules and gameplay, to the order and ranking of factions.
There are many changes that might seem insignificant: a word changed here, a clause added there. But these changes address parts of the game that have been characterized as “clearly unbalanced,” and that have distorted the competitive meta in favor of factions such as the Aeldari and Genestealer Cults.
One key example is seen with inflicting wounds. The balance dataslate changes how the Devastating Wounds weapon ability works. Critical To-Wound rolls now ignore armor and invulnerability saves, but do not produce mortal wounds.
Another example is the visibility of Towering Models. Ttowering models like Imperial Knights, are no longer able to see through ruins. Once they’re partially inside a ruin, however, they are invisible to units outside of it, and can consequently target units through that ruin.
In addition, there are changes with free Stratagem usage. There are several abilities that give a unit a free Stratagem each round or that allow them to use a Stratagem even if they have already used it this turn. The balance dataslate restricts these abilities to only the Battle Tactic Stratagem.
Keeping with the stratagem, Overwatch has been revamped. There are now some restrictions on using Overwatch. A unit can only use Overwatch against an enemy unit it can see. This means no more indirect-fire missile barrages. Just as well, Titanic Units cannot target Overwatch.
As we dig more into these small yet significant changes, we’ll keep you updated.
