Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader – Performance Notes
In a press release shared by Owlcat Games on February 20, the publisher revealed that Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader had sold more than 500k copies in its first month. It is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but the publisher did not disclose how sales were split between those platforms.
In addition, Owlcat released a patch that features over 1,800 fixes for Rogue Trader. The new game also suffered from a number of technical issues at launch, so players should be pleased to know that Owlcat is working to resolve them.
On December 7, Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader was released, receiving a 75% rating on Steam from over 9,500 reviews. The game also peaked at over 45k concurrent players, just 1,320 short of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous‘ all-time high.
Globally, Pathfinder: Kingmaker has sold almost one million copies since its September 2018 release, but its lifetime sales are unknown, and Owlcat has stopped receiving royalties since 2019.
Notably, Wrath of the Righteous, the sequel, crossed 1 million copies sold in less than two years after its launch in September 2021. That same year Owlcat separated from the former parent company MY.GAMES.
Although it is impossible to compare all titles directly in terms of sales, Rogue Trader might be doing better than previous games from the studio. Along with Pathfinder, were both funded through Kickstarter, raising over $900k and $2 million respectively
Owlcat Games made Rogue Trader in partnership with Warhammer IP owner Games Workshop, but the terms of the licensing deal are unclear. It also became Owlcat Games’ first project that was self-funded without any community help.
Moreover, it might still be too early to make real comparisons. Even though it is an easy sell to guess a resounding performance from Rogue Trader. Will it outsell Pathfinder? Will it push Owlcat to greatness? Answers that we will fathom sooner or later.
