Writing Paid Reviews for the Warhammer 40K Universe
Regardless of what the theme is, paid opinions are not qualified as reviews. So, is the case with a paid review for the Warhammer 40K universe? The author is Chris Hall and this time his take is Realms of Ruin for which I have no monetary evidence.
According to Hall, Realms of Ruin is fantastic and it will be a hard task for any game I review this year to top it. The story and production of the whole title is brilliant. Yes, like almost every game based upon a Warhammer universe the story boils down to “We need to get a thing/stop the bad guys getting a thing”.
However here it is built in a way that is compelling and engaging throughout. With memorable characters and some brilliant moments.
Writing Paid Reviews for the Warhammer 40K Universe
As you can clearly see, this is a perfect Warhammer Age of Sigmar reproduction. Sounds like a 100% game for the entire family. Nonetheless, the critics seem to tell a different story. Metacritic rates the game a 67% thumbs up. You may want to note that this way shy of the triple-A rating.
Surprisingly, the author does not stop here, ignoring Metacritic, he forges headlong. But once again it is done very well and I commend them for not going with something safer. And I also enjoy the fact that this feels like a smaller story in a larger world.
Yet still has the scope and range within it to still be compelling and engaging. Goodness, I dare say that the reason why I stuck with this one for as long as I did was off the strength of the story and how it was performed and animated more so than the gameplay.
Therefore, we consulted another recognized critic, Pixel Bandit. The forum threw its weight behind the game and gave it 70%. A bit higher than Metacritic but still not an A or even a B. Still a C-class-rated game. We wonder if the author even played the game or just asked an AI program.
Finally, I checked with the folks over at PC Gamer. Whatever they said it would be the tiebreaker. I knew they would prove me wrong, have me throw my tail between my legs, and raise my hat to Hall. However, they did not. They rated the game 55%. A failing D.
Dear review writers, please be honest. Review the product not the price tag of the article.
