Warhammer Amazon Series Gets Release Date
The Warhammer community has come alive with Games Workshop’s announcement that its movie and series deal with Amazon has been finalized. Notwithstanding, the overwhelming flow of news and speculations can often hide the most valuable information. In this case, two critical tidbits of data have been overlooked: why did a simple TV/Movie deal take so long to complete and when will Amazon Prime start running these series?
Starting at the beginning, it is important to understand why the Warhammer/Amazon agreement took so much time to complete. Three principal factors revolved around the deal that may surprise you.
- Cavil Stepped In: The Warhammer Universe became available for TV/Movie more than five years ago when Games Workshop started to seek alternative income streams. However, although many TV studios showed interest, the COVID-19 rolled back the project. In 2021, the studio re-opened invitations and many studios offered attractive bids.
However, one of the most interesting offers came from Henry Cavil. To further sweeten his bid, he allied with Vertigo Entertainment studio and was able to clinch the deal.
- The Amazon Invitation: Up to this point Amazon was not yet in the picture. The partners invited Amazon to produce the Warhammer Agreement with the condition that Cavil retained the lead role and executive producer. This was not good news for Amazon which already had its fully operational film studio and crew.
However, when Cavil agreed to abandon DC Comics and The Witcher, Amazon formerly consented to the proposal.
- Amazon/Games Workshop: For business purposes, the rights to the Warhammer Universe must rest with the financial studio and not the production team. This made it necessary for Amazon and Games Workshop to hammer out an agreement under the Amazon Prime terms. And that is where we are today, all set for production.
The second issue is when can we expect to see some Warhammer series or movie on Amazon Prime? According to a report on Coming Soon, the studio is expected to start shooting in 2024. Taking into consideration the lengthy process from script to film, the newsletter projected a 2026 rollout for Warhammer.
