He’s the nearest thing to an actual protagonist the setting offers, but he’s bound to a powerful psychic throne as a corpse. Warhammer 40K was built around tropes that Games Workshop liberally borrowed from Dune. Despite this, the Emperor plays an essential role in every aspect of the Imperium.
Recently, the Emperor’s precarious position has been a major plot point in the Warhammer universe. Could he be planning something? According to some recent books, the Emperor has more presence and agency than we had thought.

The Emperor was almost killed in the final confrontation of the Horus Heresy. His loyal sons saved him and seated him on the powerful psychic conduit known as the golden throne. Every day, he feeds on thousands of souls.
In earlier Warhammer lore, it was unclear if the Emperor was alive, or dead. But the recent books from Games Workshop’s Black Library, as well as other media about the 40K universe, show that he definitely is around and he’s pretty angry
There are actually dozens of books in the Horus Heresy series. The Horus Heresy concludes with a subseries called the Siege of Terra. This also concludes with its own trilogy series, The End and the Death.
At the start of 2024, the third book in this series, The End and the Death, was released. It tells the story of the Horus Heresy coming to Earth, culminating in an epic showdown between the Emperor and his favorite son, Horus.
