An Examination Of The Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Trailer
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is on track for a PC release this November. We’ve been waiting a while for the fist big trailer to appear from developer Fatshark. Now that it’s here, let’s see what we can learn from it.
Darktide takes place in the vast but crumbling city of Tertium, now under attack from vicious forces. The city’s only line of defense is in the Rejects, an army of convicts sentenced to serve the Inquisition through any means necessary — including sacrifice. You and your friends, playing as Rejects, will be mostly alone against an endless wave.
One thing the trailer makes clear is that Darktide will carry impressive and detailed character creation options. You can change your Reject’s body tape, eye color, facial hair and add any tattoos if you wish. You also get to pick which crime the Empire has convicted you of, and the screen admits that whether you’re guilty or innocent of it is up to your own interpretation.
You’ll also have four Class choices to pick from before you begin. You can choose from the Ogryn (mutant shock troopers), the Zealots (warriors of the church), the Psykers (wizards, basically) or the Veterans (troopers from the Empire’s military).
Darktide is a violent co-op shooter from a first-person view. The footage here may remind you of Vermintide — and why not, it’s from Fatshark, makers of that related series — but it’s not quite the same. Because your team is doing this alone, they must rely on ranged strategies rather than mindlessly charging forward. Without a plan, you’ll likely get creamed.
Warhammer 40000 Darktide was originally scheduled to be released next month, but the date has been pushed back to November 30 on PC, and an unspecified future date for XBox Series S|X. Preorders are open now.
