Game Workshop Bans Canadian Warhammer Plus Subscription
Since August 2, 2023, Game Workshop has been blocking new Canadian Subscriptions to the Warhammer Plus service. Canadians who have attempted to register for the service found their attempts rejected during registration.
According to complaints shared on the Reddit forum, players who tried to subscribe to the Warhammer Plus service. were blocked. After contacting customer service, players were advised that the situation was due to new legal changes in Canada.
However, the new ban seems to target only Quebec-based Canadians, as other provinces have reported no similar problems with the service. Interestingly, the issue arose at the same time when Quebec is introducing a new law that requires companies offering services in Quebec to adjust the marketing code.
In June 2023, a new law came into effect in Quebec. The Bill, dubbed Quebec Bill 96, intends to enforce the use of the French language throughout the province. Businesses, including Games Workshop, are required to offer their services in French.
Although the studio has not made any official announcement regarding Quebec Bill 96. It did publish an explanation on its Twitter channel apologizing for the situation. The company highlighted that there were “local challenges” that were preventing Games Workshop from processing new Warhammer Plus subscriptions in Quebec and that the studio did not have an “estimated date” for resuming the subscription services.
Meanwhile, many Canadian players are about to lose important updates and game releases that are expected to pass under the Warhammer Plus services. One such game app is the Battle Forge builder.
‘Battle Forge’ is a popular feature in the new Warhammer 40k app that enables users to build army lists for their factions. At present, it is free, but Games Workshop plans to make it a paid service locked to Warhammer Plus from “the end of August”. Canadian fans will be barred from using it once it becomes a paid service.
