Games Workshop Releases Guide for Warhammer Codex
Games Workshop revealed the road map for the 10th edition of Warhammer 40k’s codex army books. The first Warhammer 40k codex army book has been released, but there are still many armies waiting for new rules. This guide tracks all the codex release dates revealed so far, as well as everything we know about the codex releases.
What are Warhammer 40k codex books? While Warhammer 40k 10th edition is launched with full sets of free ‘Index’ rules for each army, codexes remain a traditional home for rules for each Warhammer 40k faction.
Codexes supersede the Index, updating rules and points, and adding new Warhammer 40k detachments that give you alternative ways to build your army, rewarded with new abilities, enhancements, and 40k Stratagems.
Confirmed 10th edition codex release dates
There will be at least 22 10th-edition codexes released over the next two and a half years. Here is a table of all the codexes already announced:
- Codex Space Marines and Codex Tyranids came out in the Fall of 2023, with Codex Tyranids coming first.
- Codex Necrons and Codex Adeptus Mechanicus followed during the Winter of 2023.
- Codex Supplement Dark Angels first arrived as part of the Deathwing Assault box set that dropped on February 3, 2024. The standalone codex copies went to pre-order on February 24 and hit shelves on March 9.
- Games Workshop has confirmed the Tau Empire, Adeptus Custodes, and Orks – all by the end of Spring 2024.
Tau Empire is likely to be the first to arrive since it was shown off as part of GW’s Las Vegas Open preview livestream on January 19.
There will be several new Kroot-based mercenaries joining the Tau army in 2024. These include the new Kroot Hounds, and the new Lone-Spears, which can act as tank-killers or snipers.
Players are keeping a close eye on GW for any hints of an updated 10th edition codex roadmap. In the meantime, here are all the armies yet to receive new rules for the 10th edition:
