Will Warhammer: The Old World Be Nostalgic?
When Games Workshop phased out Warhammer Fantasy, it created a vivid Age of Sigmar that moved into modern war strategy. Larger dragons, giants, and Orks became the day and soon the same transformed into an easy battle. There were dragons everywhere, even as a Stormcast steed.
Players lost the fantastic prowess that a little dragon could muster, back then you needed to use all your wits and strategy to defeat it. Now, the words out that The Old World is coming out in 2024, after an initial announcement in 2021. We are hoping that the studio will join the bandwagon of nostalgia driven games such as Fortnite and Horizon.
The Warhammer: The Old World Back Then
This game had a drastic change in gameplay direction. The rules were simplified considerably, bases were changed from square to round, and units weren’t locked into formations. However, something was definitely lost in the change.
In addition, Sigmar’s emphasis on large monsters compounded this issue. However, note that most of the models released since Age of Sigmar, i.e. big blocks of shoulder-to-shoulder infantry leading to boring monopose units of 30 identical elves or goblins. It has been obvious that there has been a move away from rank and file troops and more towards big boys, whether it be dragons, heroes on magnificent horses, or gargants.
Games Workshop’s sculptures make us miss battles where one small dragon would draw all your firepower, and it would take real bravery to defeat it. now, dragons are so commonplace that some Stormcast rely on them for cavalry.
The Old World is a chance to go back. Games Workshop can bring back fantasy as a specialist game like Warhammer 30k, but this must be executed well. No hypermodern scenery, no perfectly blended paint jobs, no giant monsters are allowed. After all, there is a new gaming trend, and its called Nostalgia.
